John Francis McCabe will talk about the great age of European fine art portraiture from the late Renaissance to the genre’s great achievements in the 19th Century. The talk will present and discuss examples of paintings you will find both exhilarating and brilliant, from Leonardo da Vinci to Vermeer to John Singer Sargent. John will show these iconic paintings and discuss some of the little known cultural and psychological backgrounds of these works and explain their meaning.
For example, John will talk about The Girl with the Red Hat by Vermeer, held by the National Gallery of Art, da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine, Hans Holbein’s portrait of Sir Thomas More, John Singer Sargent’s portrait of Madam X, as well as works by Caravaggio and Velázquez, and a number of other masterpieces of portraiture.
